BBC Chair Samir Shah has made it abundantly clear that finding a replacement for Davie is his utmost priority. Sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, have revealed some intriguing frontrunners. Apple TV's Europe chief, Jay Hunt, former BBC content boss Charlotte Moore, and ex-Channel 4 CEO Alex Mahon are all serious contenders. What's more, an insider favorite has yet to emerge, keeping the race wide open.
Davie is expected to remain in his position until at least March, when the government's consultation on BBC charter renewal concludes. An interim director could be appointed, with Rhodri Talfan Davies, the nations and regions chief, being a strong contender for this temporary role.
The new Director General will face a challenging landscape, with the BBC navigating its position in a media ecosystem dominated by tech giants and facing opposition from conservative politicians and media proprietors.
